How long did he let it warm up on gas before switching. They need to be warmed up good before switching over. As far as the miss it could be a sticky injector, how long had it been since it was last run. Could of gotten some air in the line if it had been a while since it had been run. Yes if you didn't take care when shutting the tractor down properly you could cause engine damage. Pre cups in injector chamber could have cracks, check oil for coolant and check radiator for bubbles. How did it sound once it warmed up on diesel. Might try driving it and riding the brakes and see how it sounds under load. Check and see if there is any seepage around the injectors, the lines that may provide air to the fuel system.
