If you look around, you should be able to find a 4 foot trencher you can rent. I rented a 48 inch walk behind a while back. While you have the trencher, go ahead and take care of all the trenches you need: yard hydrants, electrical to the barn, etc. Trenching is a messy job, it's best to get it over and done with. If you have city water available, it might be in your best interest to go ahead and tap in now. Tap fees tend to go up; it might cost a lot of money to tap in later. Note that if the city runs sewer down your street, you'll probably be required to connect to the sewer and water at whatever price they decide to charge you. You can still drill a well if you decide to tap into city water. Just don't connect the two systems, or pay attention to the local code if you do.
