I don't know if there's a formula for bore/rod correlation since the resulting force depends on the rod diameter and fluid pressure. The rod stability relies on the shoulder length and clearance not cylinder bore. Last year I changed the seals in my New Idea/Horn loader which has the ram type actuator. I took the measurements while it was apart.
Rod diameter - 2.344"
Shoulder diameter - 2.353"
Shoulder length - 5.25"
Cylinder diameter - 2.75"
I got the seals from NAPA's on-hand stock and they hold fine. There's also a non-pressure weather seal on the outside end of the shoulder just to keep the elements out. Hope this helps.
