O/T '84 Mercedes question

There's something in the trunk, a pump of some kind(?), between the left trunk hinge and the quarter panel. It comes on approx. every 30 seconds, runs for 15 seconds, gets pretty hot and has a squeak. There's a metal line coming from one end, runs along the quarter panel and ends by the tail light, pinched flat on this end. Looks factory. Same kind of line comes out of opposite end and runs forward somewhere, but I can't see where it goes, unless maybe if I pull the back seat out. Any idea what this thing is? Thanks,
