I drove a company owned 1988 F250 extended cab with a manual 5 speed and a 7.3 non turbo.
You have to understand that I am a Chevy man, but that 88 Ford was a great truck. It would get over 20 MPG on a trip and the performance was not bad at all for a diesel. It wouldn"t beat a similar truck with a 460 or 454, but then you didn"t need to own an oil well to keep it in fuel either. As far as towing, I towed a 32 foot job trailer between Guthrie and Dickens Texas. That was a bit much for the old girl. But the job trailer was not at all streamlined. It was 8" wide and 12" high. Talk about wind resistance!!
If you live in flat country, then I don"t think that you would go wrong. But if you are thinking of hauling more than 6/8000 lbs. with it, or in hilly terrain, I would think seriously about a 2 ton or bigger rig. Make SURE that your trailer brakes work on WHATEVER you haul. Even a small tractor can push you right through an intersection if you don"t have trailer brakes. I have seen quite a few wrecks where either the trailer didn"t have any brakes, or they weren"t hooked up. Johnny Law & your insurance company take a dim view of inadequate brakes.
The 88 F250 that I had was a great driving truck. With the long wheelbase because of the extended cab and the 8 foot bed, it rode exceptionally well for a 3/4 ton truck. Good Luck, Britt
