The self destructing plastic must be the reason for the experience of a friend several years ago with his Nuffield- the entire instrument panel/steering pedestal disintegrated as he was driving down the road. He wished someone could have been there with a camera- said he was trying to grab important looking stuff and hold it all together, while simultaneously trying to get the critter stopped. I don't think he ever fixed it, and it can probably still be found, resting quietly in the weeds near Yelm, Washington.
