Sounds like you are much better off, without even considering the human aspects of the deal. From your description of the first one, you would have considerably more in it than its worth by the time you are finished. I'm not a big Deere fan, but I see nicely painted ones go through auctions around here in the $1,500 range, which would be a much better deal than even a free one that needs tires, rims, etc. and a lot of work.
