The F-keys, or Function keys, were used a lot more when computers didn"t use the mouse. For example, it used to be that Word Perfect had a function for each F-key, and you had to know what each one did in order to use the program. In Windows, you can still do most things with the keyboard, but I think they mostly keep those available in case your mouse would quit working. Otherwise, the F-keys are rarely used anymore, and they"re just there for the rare occasion when you would need them.
