The tractor would have been positive ground originally. Are you sure you have it hooked up that way now? (If the battery has even been completely discharged, it is possible that someone has charged it with reverse polarity. Yes, that can happen!) (If the generator shop is "on the ball", they will have polarized the generator for that ground polarity.) Also, you need to polarize the newly-installed generator BEFORE initial startup of the engine. It is very important that the generator be grounded to the engine, and that the regulator be grounded, also. Too much paint on mounting surfaces and bolts, or a rubber grommet-mounted regulator missing it's ground strap can interfere with grounding.
