Been married to a public school teacher for 32 years. There is a big difference in schools and teachers. Some teachers are as you say, there to collect a check and get rhe summer off, and some are there because they want to make a difference. My wife comes home and works 2 or 3 hours every evening on papers and preparing lessons.

Regarding home school versus public school, the big difference is the interest participation of the parents. You would be amazed how many parents have absolutely no interest in their children's academics.
