I had the same problem. Solution was I took the self exciter out and put in a convintional regulator. Have a very good friend that has a auto-electric shop and he told me that they lose charge and have to be spun fairly fast to build back up to start charging again. I had one a Farmall H and it's max rpm's are not enough to re-energize the exciter. Once the start losing charge they will keep doing it. I had him spin it and recharge it and by the time I got home it was dead again. To solve your headaches I would just replace the self-exciter with a conventional regulator. Bill {Antique Acres}
