Starting Fluid

My red ford ( gas ) has gotten hard to start lately. I have a lot going so I have not had a chance to look carefully for the root cause. But I have this can of starting fluid and it is pretty quick to use. Is starting fluid helpful? How much starting fluid is enough? How long does the squirt last? Like if I crank for twenty seconds and nothing happens I am apt to give it a rest. Then crank again in a minute.

BTW

Yesterday I cranked a lot. I though I would kill the battery before it would start. So I put the magnetic heater on the oil pan. I waited thirty minutes. I gave it a shot of juice. It started right up.

It starts better with out pulling the choke lever too.
