Howdy folks,

Well, I wanna say a big thank you to all who put up suggestions (and encouragement) for my post about the 1946 JD A. I started workin on it early this morning. Took the valve cover off and checked and did a little resetting on the valve clearances. Didn't really need anything done. Just a minor adjustment. So, we started it and it did the same thing. Puffin back through. So, while dad went to a visitation I stayed back and totally reset the time again. Got on the tractor and it acted like a wild animal. It backfired through the muffler, made terrible sounds through the petcocks, just awful. Boy, I thought, must have really screwed it up this time. I thought I might have tripped the mag at the wrong point when I had it off doin the reset. So under a hunch I decided to switch the two plug wires on the mag. I had made sure to keep them straight from the start of this ordeal and never changed them. Well, after doing so I cranked and...pop pop pop pop. It started and ran like the well oiled machine it is. After some load and idle adjustments it pulled just fine. I'm guessin that back when grandad tightened those valves and messed them up he must have tinkered with the wires too. Boy what a relief. Sure, it was so simple but man how wonderful. Of course, we're still not out of the woods. Shortly after starting picking again the pickers slip clutch went to pieces and we now have a new one on order from JD. But man I love this old equipment. Thanks again and God bless.
