Backfiring throught the carburetor means that the engine is firing with an intake valve open. Are you 100% sure that the timing is correct? Either the timing is off, or you have a valve problem. If the timing is correct, then one or both intakes valve are not properly seating. You may have a wrong valve adjustment, or a bad valve job. Was it done by a reputable machine shop?
