Ford 1210 ran out of fuel

I have a Ford 1210 diesel. Right after I finished cutting my lawn, I checked the fuel tank and although the fuel was low, it was not empty. So I let the tractor sit while running for 2 minutes and suddenly it gave out. I think there was not enough gas. But when I filled the tank back up a little black smoke comes out and it tries to start up but fails. Can anyone give me instructions on how to get this thing back up and running? I just got the tractor and Im not too good of mechanic, so please tell me where things like the injector lines and stuff are.
