2418 Power King Backfiring

I've had my 2418 about 10 years and have not had any trouble with it until now. Seems it wants to backfires all the time. It started out the first of the summer and only when I first stared it up. It would clear up in a minute or so. Then it got worst until now. It will still start but I can't drive it or mow. I've checked and reset the points, new sparkplug and wire, set the carburator, I've heard it could be a valve. If so, how can I check without going through a lot of trouble? Any thoughts on what the trouble is will certainly be appreciated. Roby
