I had one this past winter that was doing the exact same thing; the same symptoms exactly down to the black smoke.

This one turned out to be a bad fuel line. It was disintegrating from the inside out and plugging up the filter to a degree. I'd let it set for a little while and the thing would then run again until she plugged up again.

That thing drove me nuts till I replaced that line.

The line seemed plumb okay too; the only thing that pointed me in that direction was that I was getting some black soot-like looking stuff in the filter from that line. It had been on there since the engine was new in �89 or so.

Go figure,
