If you don't know jack about cars and how to tell a good one from a bad one, you should probably buy a new one if you can afford it. IF you are a car nut like me and know cars inside and out, you can tell an abused car from a well maintained one. Buying a late model trade is the best way to get the most bang for your buck. Buy that with an extended warranty, the car is as good as new and you have a bunch of $ in your pocket. I have learned not to try to play the status game. It will leave you poor and disappointed. I can't believe that you guys will wrench all winter on an old tractor but don't want to spend 1/2 an hour installing an oxygen sensor. Oh well to each his own I guess.
