The tax break is the same, new or used. If you buy a vehicle over 6,000 lbs. gross weight (I think thats the number), you can depreciate the whole thing for first year (at least to the extent it is used for business and your gross business income exceeds the price paid). The idea was to provide an incentive to businesses to buy delivery vehicles, etc.- but it doesn't say "truck", so that's why you see all the doctors and lawyers using a Ford Excursion, Lincoln Navigator, Sherman tank, etc. to go the post office. Methinks that using the tax break to rationalize buying new rather than used is just that- a rationalization.
