You make a lot of good points. I'll pick a bone with you over the scheduling issue... drivers, not dispatchers, are responsible for their own actions. I guess this is why I don't drive for a living; if someone told me to "get there on time or else" I'd choose "or else". To me, "getting there (alive)" is much more important than "on time". Your point about becoming suddenly sleepy is an excellent one. It can happen anytime and may be hard for some drivers to recognize. For example, I rarely eat while on the road as a big meal makes me sleepy. But if I do eat, I'll walk around for a half hour or so until I'm fully awake. Let's hope that maybe even one person will benefit from this tragedy by learning his/her limits and staying within them.
