I think you got took JDknut. Those Danas aren't the most fun to rebuild labor-wise what with the preloaded housing and everything, but $4000 is ridiculous. I broke the Dana 60 front on my Dodge Cummins in half, bought a used replacement Dana 61 front and rebuilt it end to end for under $5000, and that included a new carrier to be able to install my old 3.54 gears as I reused the ring and pinion. The carrier was only about $85 as I remember, and the bearing kit was around $150. I replaced the spindle u-joints with Spicers ($60 a piece) and replaced the wheel bearings with Timkens while I was there. The Dana 61 is kind of an oddball front end that they came up with in order to be able to run higher gears. It was used in trucks like my grandpa's '90 Dodge Cummins with an automatic and no overdrive, as it has 3.08s in it to get decent highway speed. The highest ratio available for a regular Dana 60 is 3.54. I had rebuilt Danas before and didn't feel like messing with it, so I took it to Inland Truck Parts and had them set it up for me. I did the rest of the assembly. I think the labor was $200.
