If the fitting has dirt in it, replace it. It makes no sense to force dirt into a part you're trying to lubricate.

If you are dealing with old, solidified grease, any auto parts store will sell you a hand impact tool that you fill with oil and whack with a hammer that frees them up every time. Be sure to get one with a flexible hose to get at those fittigs you can't get at straight on.
