Whenever possible I take out old clogged Zerk fittings and replace them. I've found that's more time efficient than messing with a clogged one. The fittings are very cheap. I get them online from Fittings and Adapters (link below) very reasonably. You can get almost every size and neck angle in both SAE and metric in small quantities. They also sell a neat little snap on cap that keeps the Zerks from getting dirt and grease encrusted. They work pretty well except on things that rotate at high speed.
