I don't agree with old backhoes being money pits. I've had a Deere 310 for about 5 years. Paid $6500 for it. I've replaced one hose, filters, fluid and rebuilt the hydraulic pump. Got a total of about $500 into it. I've dug and moved nearly 1000 yds of dirt so far and it's still going strong. Amazingly useful machines. Maybe I was lucky but I think good old backhoes are available. You probably need to find one that has nothing broke on it when you buy it and run it for a while before you buy.
