gm alternator conversion problem

I have had a gm alternator on a tractor for years, using a switch to excite regulator. tried to hook up a light bulb in line to eliminate switch, but it does not work, bulb stays on,alternator does not charge.do I have the wrong size bulb? do not know what size it is, its in a small holder about the size of a dime and would go in to a dash board with an amber lens over it.. any suggestions?
