I do it all the time. I use a rear mounted MF dynabalanced unit and it cuts weeds like a charm.
Every now and then you have to stop, lift up while backing to remove a ball of crap at the end of the blade. Watch for muskrat burrows that may cause the tractor to lean more than expected toward the pond water. So far so good.
