How do you polarize the generator?

Can you go over how to polarize the generator? I did get a reading from the generator when I grounded the F terminal and hooked my tester up to the A terminal and the other lead to a ground. What throws me is the reading at the gauge and when I shorted between the generator and battery terminals with the tractor running and got a negative reading on the amp gauge. Thanks for the help.
