Try so diagnosing before jumping in. It appears that heat and oil thinning is a factor. Try mounting a pressure test gauge on the ports and find out. Is there an oil cooler that is internally or externally plugged?
Who knows if its dirt, sludge, plugged filter, sump screen, just a worn pump or what. Could just even be the wrong oil accidentally dumped in there.
Odds are a scrapped tractor with a working transmission could be found cheaper than doing a rebuild. These transaxles are common across most brands/models.
