Tractor newbe needs advice on finding a tractor

Hi, For years I've dreamed of owning a John Deere tractor and I figure it's time to do something about it. I'm interested mainly in a early 28--40? John Deere D model.The model with the name John Deere on the radiator grill. I'm not sure when they changed it? From what I'm hearing it's probably a good idea to buy one that is already restored somewhat. I'm too old now to restore one now myself unless all it needs is paint. I don't have a ton of money but Ive seen a few on the internet from $2000--$7000. Somehwhere in between that seems reasonable? What is a good price for an excellant condition Model D and how do I go about finding one . I live in Virginia.
