Only if you want to discharge the 12 volt battery! The voltage much be matched. Your battery is like a storage tank and your generator or alternator is like a pump. Think of the voltage as a "pressure". If your tank is at 12 psi and you have a pump that puts out 6 psi, how much flow can that pump put into the tank? Nada! In fact the flow runs out of the tank while you are pumping! So your system must be matched n voltage. In fact, your pump must be a little higher in output then the storage tank to account for line losses. A reguar 12 volt system has an alternator output of about 13-14 volts.
