I understand your point very well. Beleive me, I've seen way worse than what you describe. However, not having access to the right equipment is no reason to risk your life. My experience is that most people are willing to help... all you have to do is ask. Many people have borrowed my floor jack and 6 ton jackstands. I rather get my floor jack back with all the oil missing than have to attend a neighbor's funeral.
