I have split quite a bit of firewood myself, the types of wood that you mention usually will split quite easily with an ax, it"s when you get into elm, osage orange, and a few others that you need the wedges and a good 8 or 10 pound mall. In my younger days I could actually handsplit ash wood in less time than it took with a hydraulic splitter. (notice I said younger days.)
