Will - Surest test is to put an accurate voltmeter across the battery and observe it during a startup. As the ammeter reading increases, if the voltmeter reading exceeds 7.5 volts or so, the problem is most likely a bad regulator. (Verify by temporarily disconnecting the F wire at the regulator - if charging stops and the voltage drops off, the regulator's the problem). However if the voltage falls below 6.5 volts as the ammeter reading increases suspect a failing battery. Note: A cheap DVM (digital voltmeter) like sold by Radio Shack, etc. often give false readings on this type of testing. They are "fooled" by the electrical noise inherent in these systems. Better to use an old style analog meter, or a quality industrial DVM like a Fluke.
