What you have described sounds like a normal John Deere 2 cyl. with a single induction carb. at an idle the 2nd cyl. doesn't get a good fuel mixture so they don't run smooth until a load is applied. The models starting in 1953 like the model 50 and 60 have dual induction carbs. and they run much smoother.
