If you pull the head off, check the surface of the block... less chance of it not being flat.. but possible... If it is a diesel with wet sleeves check the liner stand out.. if the liner is sticking out too much you could get the same results..
I think the others have givven good advise.. but if you tapped the threads... and there is no water in the cylinders... I would warm the engine and retorque.. (As others have said.)
