Actually, almost al of the older 6V starters will take 12V easily as long as they are not operated for too long each time you use them (which is usually short since the 12V spins things quite a bit faster than 6V). Every 12V conversion that has been done still uses the 6V starter, well almost all of them anyways. On the other hand, if the electric system is set up properly, I've never seen the need for 12V. I have 4 6V tractors and they all work great on the 6V system.
