The higher speed, 1000 rpm pto is for use withhigh hp requirement pto equipment! For example, you would use 1000 rpm most likely with a 20 foot batwing brush cutter, and you'd likely use 540 with a 9 foot moco or a small square baler! The 1000 rpm speed can carry a lot more hp than can the 540. What the other posters said---75-80 hp is about tops for 540 rpm! While even 95 or 100 hp is possible with 540, you are beginning to enter the region where you run the risk of breaking the pto shaft. Many tractors 115 hp up originally only came with the 1000 rpm setting? They weren't expected to be used with low hp requirement equipment. One of the most resisted tractor features of all time, however was the 1000 rpm pto! For some reason, it was instantly hated when it came out, sometime around 1959. Out of curiousity, what tractor are we talking about here, and what sorts of implements?
