decompression valve for starting

Wanting to make sure I am doing no harm by using the
decompression valve to start my L210 Kubota. Turns over
real slow if I don't use it and starts with lots of effort and
black smoke. Using the decomp valve to increase revs
makes a big difference in getting it started.

Manual not really helpful. Suggestions?
