What you may be referring to is a SERIES-PARALLEL SWITCH. With this, you use 2 - 6 Volt batteries, and the switch connects them in series to give 12 Volts for starting, and then re-connects them in parallel, to be charged by a 6 Volt generator.

JC Whitney USED to sell them, along with many other sources. While you could probably find one today, the cost of the switch, the extra cables, the need to purchase an extra battery, and the labor involved in this scheme make simply doing a 12 Volt conversion look pretty good!

You don't state what piece of equipment your friend is working with, but in most all cases, with a little forethought and care, a 12 Volt conversion is quite straight forward, reasonably priced, and reliable.
