I won't give any specific investment advice, but you absolutely should participate in your employer's 401K. First, most employers match up to a certain amount--that's money for free! Second, you are investing pre-tax dollars. This means that you'll get interest on money that you would have given to Uncle Sam. Even if you withdraw early and take a penalty, you're probably still ahead of where you would be if you had invested after-tax dollars. I've been in a 401K since they were introduced in the early eighties. The only thing I regret is that I didn't switch some of my 401K to a fixed-income fund when the market toppped out. I lost over half the value of my 401k in a couple of years.
