I guess another reason the fenders are so close is that 18.4x38 is larger than any 38" tire that came standard on 1655. I believe the largest mentioned in the owner's manual is 16.9x38, which in a radial should be more than enough tire for a 70ish HP tractor. I agree that radials are far superior, but he is shopping $250-300 tires and will be in for a $$ shock with the radials everyone seems to be recommending. Another nice thing about radials is that in many applications you can get away from weights and fluid fill.
