As I understand it the orignal Ford 9N with a 3spd was not properly geared for certain specific tasks,ie:RPM vs groundspeed.Sherman,Hupp,Howard and manufacturers designed auxilary transmissions indifferent configurations to overcome these deficiencies.Out of all the contenders the simple and tough Sherman step down,step up and combo models proved itself to be the most popular unit.Originally they were a dealer aquired(from Sherman)dealer/owner installed accessory,but later on became a popular Ford installed option.Popular on the 9N,8N models,they also were used on many 4spd models of the 600/800,601/801 series from 1953 on,Including the Jubilee and NAAs.Developement of the Selectshift,5spd manual and shuttle type trannies brought better gearing to the Ford line and desire for the aux units faded away.
