Deere has had a problem with this on various models. During cranking, the main hydraulic pump begins pressurizing the hydraulic system, which overloads the starter. When you operate the steering sysem, you "bleed off" some of the system pressure, making cranking easier.

Good, fully-charged batteries, clean connections, and a starter in tip-top shape aid starting, even with the added load of the pump.

Deere makes an "electric de-stroking kit" for a number of tractors, which consists of an electric valve, wired to operate while the starter is engaged, that causes the main pump to "go out of stroke", and cease pumping oil during starter operation.

A quick check of jdparts.com failed to show a kit listed for your tractor, but perhaps a knowledgeable Deere hydraulic expert could advise if there is a valve that would work with your tractor.
