Blaze, I suspect that MDH is right about the exhaust valve. With the tractor idling, place one end of a dollar bill flat over the exhaust pipe and see if the exhaust tries to pull the dollar bill in. Just hold the dollar bill wiith the end laying across the exhaust opening. This is not the most scientific test, but if there is a bad exhaust valve, it will draw a vacuum through the exhaust valve on the intake stroke. A vacuum gauge is a better way of checking this too. A burned/leaking exhaust valve will give an eratic vacuum reading. A compression test will support the results of the other tests too. If compression is low on one cylinder, squirt a little oil in that cyl and test again. If the compression increases, this indicates leaking rings not valves.
