Guys, Particularly Ron and Jon...thanks for all the information. I've learned a LOT about charging systems from your dialogue. The battery I was using was new...I ASSUMED it was charged, wrongly. After charging it three hours yesterday my charge rate upon starting was no higher than 12 amps at working rpm, fell to discharge at 400 rpm, about 5 amps at about 1000 rpm. I have the #2 connector wired, with the alternator output ("BAT") terminal to the ammeter, then from the other ammeter terminal to the battery connection on the terminal block. I will remove the #2 connector and wire it directly to the "BAT" connection, as to be certain my ammeter isn't interfering. It doesn't appear at this point that either the alternator or battery have been damaged by the experience. Hope this sheds a little light on the discussion. Thanks again for the outpouring of information.
