You are right. Without IH, the Case name would now be like Oliver, A-C, Cletrac, Cockshutt and many others.
The IH agriculture line was a victim of many forces including poor management, inflexible unions, the russian embargo, an overall weak economy etc. But IH had a fairly complete line of ag equipment. Case was down to a few unpopular tractors and not much else. Tenneco saw a chance to aquire a complete ag line, including an established customer base and dealer network, without spending time and money on development.
The rest is history.
