Well, not really, at least when they're set narrow together. I spent a bunch of time on a tricycle Farmall "M" in hog lots and the like, and without the wheels set out, you'll get a solid mass of mud between the wheels that the tires will not "eject", to the point that it will come squirting out between the hubs and rims. If that were the reason, they'd have set the wheels out wide from the factory so nothing could get caught in there to begin with. The "V" is really for row clearance and ease of steering.
