Remember this is in Canada I'm talking about here. Most of the reserved timber rights are on land that is sold by the huge logging outfits. They'll log what they can, then sell the land without the timber rights, so that they have the right to back in 50 or 100 years later and do it again. Our govt allows that. I've never heard of anyone being charged for cutting firewood for example, on their own land, but if a logging company that owned the timber rights came in and clearcut your property, you would have no recourse if you didn't own those rights yourself. Mineral rights are also usually a seperate entity from land here. My wife still owns full oil and mineral rights to a bunch of farm land that her family owned at the turn of the last century and sold in the 1950's. It's worthless unless oil or potash or some type of ore is ever discovered there, then it could be worth a fortune. This also happens a lot on old mining claims. They'll sell the land, but not the mineral rights. Gravel rights are protected in the same way. You can buy land, but if it has a gravel pit, someone else may well own the rights to said gravel. All of these rights can be bought and sold, but very seldom are they included when you buy land. Stick
