Instead of conventional mechanical gears, IH went with a variable displacement hydraulic pump and drive motor. It's a neat concept. There was a drawback to this design as the hydro drive was not as efficient as a mechanical drive thus a 656 standard drive would outperform a 656 Hydro in certain applications. This caused a number of complaints from customers.
