I'd look for a F350 or F250 that already has a receiver hitch and a brake controller package installed. Figure out the rear end ratio you want/need as well before hand.
You can probably find a running/workable truck with all the above for $1500.
Yah the motor has to run but my experience has been it easier find good replacement motors(for low $$) than trannies,rear ends, etc...
